Video Mixing / Video Jocks

Video mixing / Video Mixing, is it the new craze for Weddings, Quince’s, Sweet 16th’s, etc?

In the past year or so, DJs mixing videos seems to be pretty darn popular. Sure it looks awesome both on the screen and from an entertainment enhancement standpoint.

We receive inquiries for video mixing. We just do not offer it yet. Not because we are behind on the dj scene, but more of a personal preference right now.

We like to think that the service we provide is professional and classy and currently we’d like to stay that way.

When we receive a playlist from a customer, we usually receive most Top 40 hits, which are usually hip-hop and dance/club style music. That’s awesome, we love the music and people want their guest dancing and going crazy with what’s currently hot.

Here is where the video part comes in-

Ever seen Shakira’s Shewolf video? How bout Usher? No wait, what about Pitbull’s videos? Yeah! Pretty revealing huh?

Is that something you really want displayed at your event?

Don’t get me wrong, video mixing looks awesome in bars and clubs, but I think I’ll leave it that way for now. At least I will.

I may get some replies from this, both good and bad. By all means, enlighten me. In this business you’re never to old to learn but I am old enough to make reasonable decisions.

DJ Talk- Meeting the customer

We meet with potential customers pretty frequently

First thing’s first. What’s your budget? Oh, I’m sorry, what did you say your name was? JUST KIDDING!!!

If you’ve already arranged a meeting with your client, please remember their name when greeting them. Yes, I have been at fault to that but have really improved over the years.

Some of us tend to revert to good behavior habits such as when job interviewing. We want to be at our best.

Well, we’re Dj’s!! And with great dj skills comes great responsibilities ( I stole that line from Spider Man)
We’re good friends lol.

I digress.

And this is exactly what I’m referring to. Learn to be yourself in a professional yet fun way. Remember, customers, for the most part, want someone with enthusiasm and a sense of humor. YOU are the one providing the service.

Business is business, so naturally, you’ll know when to be serious and when not to.

The trick is to establish a connection with your customer immediately. My wife and I are great at doing this. We are professional yet fun.

As soon as we see the customer, it’s an immediate eye to eye connection.

I probably say this in other articles, and why not again. Customers, many times, are nervous. They don’t do this too often and many are spending time and money. A Wedding/Quinceañera/Sweet 16th is a huge expense. You have to make them feel comfortable and confident.

Even simple questions can go along way and are great for ice breakers
“Have trouble finding the place? Luckily my GPS got me here this time. Last place it took me to was the ocean. I didn’t know my car floated that good”

This may have sounded a bit corny, but if the client smiles or giggles, that’s a good thing. They may want to relate one of their experiences with you, and if so, even better. They are now feeling comfortable and you’ve just opened the lines of communication.

From this point on, go to work. Fade away from the jokes and get busy. Always remember, this IS their event and an extremely important one.

I can go on and on with tips and advise, did I just say the same thing?

Mariachis and Events

Mariachi’s for Weddings and other events

Don’t you just love them?

Mariachis have been around for centuries and are still used in most traditional style Mexican weddings, and they are swell for all other occasions as well. Ok, maybe not for bachelorette parties, lol, but hey to each his own, right?

They truly bring a vibe that can get a party started or even create a romantic setting.

From a Dj’s perspective, we think they are perfect for ice breakers and mood setters as well.

Their naturally loud instruments and voices can carry on throughout most Venues.

What’s great about them is their ability to interact with the audience. I truly think they help prepare the guests for an even more exciting night.

In terms of performance times, from our experience, thirty minutes is too short, an hour is just right and an hour and a half to two hours is too long.

Mariachis will generally play a few songs for the guests of honor and gradually work their way across the venue until they have played a song for most or all guests.

Average pricing is around $375 per hour.

Most requested songs are El Rey, El Mariachi Loco, Amor Eterno and of course, las Mañanitas (birthday song)

Mobile Club DJ’s Videography Alternative

Videographer Alternative-

Looking for videographers? Well, let me tell you about a little endeavor that has been, for some odd reason, working for us here at Mobile Club DJ’s.

As you know, videographers are a dime a dozen except for their pricing. They can be expensive and others, very expensive. Naturally so, they are worth every penny. They are there to capture almost every cherished moment of your event and now days, the quality of video is excellent as well. Some may even provide a “blue ray” disc.

Here’s where Mobile Club DJ’s comes in. We purchased an small HD Camera to record footage of our events, or should I say “Your Events”. The intent was to capture what we do, in terms of dj’ing, mc’ing, etc., and also capture a little extra detail such as the cake, décor and the bride and groom portrait, which makes for great filler and editing. Low and behold, many people like these videos that we post on our site and that’s where it all begins ; )

In the past six months, we have received requests to purchase the videos that we post on our website. This is odd to us because our videos range from 5-15minutes. It’s strategically done this way so that the video can be seen on You Tube and potential clients can see our work. We’ll gladly sale these videos and at an affordable price. They make for great quick memories of the event. Even more, we’ve decided to record more footage and can make these videos up to an hour long, if time and memory allows.

We ask customers what is it that they find intriguing about our videos and their interest in them and their answers were surprising to me-

They felt that our videos capture many fun moments that may sometimes be missed by videographers and that it seems like we are naturally partying with them, as opposed to many videographers that simply leave their camera on a tri-pod and go around the perimeter of the dance floor.

Others also said that us, being dj’s, know how and when the fun will play out since we somewhat control the tempo throughout the event. I’ll have to agree with them. That’s what good dj’s do!

We pride ourselves in what we do and even so, accidentally provide pretty good videos too.

We do not discourage people from having a videographer. I think they are awesome and do exceptional work. We are not videographers ourselves. We simply provide an alternative solution that may be, at times, just what the customer is looking for.

Selecting Your DJ for your Event; Wedding, Quince, Sweet 16th, etc.

So who do I hire after all?
You’re the coach of a football team, it’s fourth and goal with 3 seconds left on the clock of the fourth quarter. You need a to make the play. You begin to doubt your decisions. There’s a lot at stake. You might as well go with your best player right?

It’s my day and I want my day to be special. Darn it, it needs to be as close to perfection as in my dreams. I’m going with-

THE PRESSURE!!!

The truth is, many DJ’s have many different styles and personalities. So why go with this one and not the other? Well, here’s where it starts. A DJ should make you feel confident. He/She should be able to match your personality, styles, ideas, etc.

Why?

# 1 You want Your day to be, just that, YOUR DAY!
#2 You’re paying for it! You want to make sure you get your money’s worth.
#3 You want to be comfortable with the company that you select to provide entertainment for you and your loved ones

Now, very importantly, please do not expect much from a Company that may charge $250.00-$500.00 for your wedding reception. You may be lucky and have a diamond in the rough, but it’s simply that. Are you willing to take that chance on your Dream Day?

When I was coming up in the DJ business, about two years into it, I had a family member bypass me for a Radio Jock. Why not? They’re professionals, they know what they’re doing. They work for the radio station for crying out loud!

I still smile remembering those days. The DJ showed up with to CD Walkmans hooked up to a small mixer and some speakers that couldn’t accommodate the venue and a small beacon (police) light. He wasn’t too great either. Gotta give him credit though, he made around $600.00 (fifteen years ago) for playing during band breaks and got away with it.

So even with this scenario, you’re wondering and probably saying “well darn if you do, darn if you don’t”.

Here’s the thing. Many of us have experience and are versatile to carry out any event. Others have experience with only certain genres and styles. What’s best for you will ultimately be your decision, but let us help you in making that decision.

First, a DJ should be very responsive and this is usually the first impression.

If you are inquiring on their services and are waiting for a response either e-mail or phone call, you should receive a call within 24-48 hours. If you receive a response sooner, even better.

Second, a DJ should make you feel comfortable and confident. See if you and your fiance’ click with the DJ. It’s nice to create a relationship with your entertainment provider. This also makes for better and more effective communication. Usually, when we are beginning the introductions, the bride and groom are not as nervous and are actually more excited than ever. Part of that has to do with that bond we’ve created with them. They will also lean to you, because after all, you’ve done this many times. They haven’t and they now have trust in you to get them through it.

Third, see if the DJ can actually prove his services to you. This is extremely important. This may happen by way of seeing them perform at one of their events, seeing if they have a music mix of what they can do or even video testimonials. I’m a very big fan of gig log/video testimonies. Why? pretty easy, they capture the bride and groom’s true thoughts. Testimonials may be written in many blogs, reviews, websites, etc.but wouldn’t you rather see this in video? It sure as heck proves its validity

With video testimonials/gig logs, you also get to see the DJ in action and also see how he/she mixes their music and how the crowd reacts to it.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are other factors to consider, such as appearance, puntuality, quality of equipment, wedding planning forms, etc.; However, I do believe this may also be captured in the intial meeting, events and in the videos they provide, if they do in fact provide them.
